Have a short list of favorite baby names? Want to make sure that the name you pick is at least a little bit unique? The Social Security Administration's top 1000 baby names lists are a great resource for gauging the popularity of names, but they don't take into account multiple spellings of the same name. We've created nameCRUNCH and the tools on these pages to overcome that limitation and offer a couple of extra ways to look at a name's popularity.

We've created these tools for fun, but we also take the details of the anaylses seriously. If you're even thinking about taking our results seriously then we urge you to take a look at our discussion of what the numbers mean. You can also get technical details about how some of the numbers are calculated.

What would you like to do?

* We've reranked and tabulated the top 1000 baby names for each year, taking into account spelling variations and nicknames (as we see them). We also show percentages and, for the most recent year (2005), a score that shows the trend of the names and name groups over the past decade.

* Using those groupings of similar names, we have a couple of tools to help you analyze the popularity of the names on your lists. If you don't like the way we've grouped the names, then the tools will also let you do some grouping for yourself.

* We also have a couple of tools to help you find your own groupings or find names based on spelling, popularity and trend.

* Finally, we have some observations and analyses about the statistics of the lists and what they say about parental creativity.

Have fun! Please send comments and suggestions to names@gobatconsulting.com.
